The year 2018 kicked off with Imran Raza Kazmi’s suspense thriller, Parchi, starring Hareem Farooq, Ali Rehman Khan, Ahmed Ali Akbar and Usman Mukhtar. It also saw the release of the animated film, Allahyar and the Legend of Markhor that set, at minimum, a new benchmark for computer-generated animation in the industry.
2018 is also the year when Asim Abbasi’s Cake (featuring Sanam Saeed, Aamina Sheikh and Adnan Malik) and Adnan Sarwar’s Sohai Ali Abro-starrer Motorcycle Girl, released, lending credibility to the movement of modern Pakistani cinema.
Both films have been hailed for their originality, storytelling and acting by critics across the board. This year also saw the release of comedy melodrama, Azad, directed and written by Rehan Sheikh that managed to make a mark for a few reasons.
However, with the summer season upon us, it is now time to look at the Eid season which usually ushers in a number of releases. Read on to find out more about the four films that are scheduled to release on Eid-ul-Fitr, in June 2018.
7 Din Mohabbat In
Starring superstar Mahira Khan alongside her Ho Mann Jahan co-star Sheheryar Munawar, 7 Din Mohabbat In is all set to release on Eid ul Fitr.
It has been directed by duo of Meenu Gaur and Farjad Nabi, whose debut directorial venture Zinda Bhaag (2013) became the first Pakistani film to be submitted for an Oscar consideration. Written by Fasih Bari Khan, the romantic comedy shows the life of Tipu (essayed by Munawar) on a quest to find his true love and the troubles he encounters during his journey.
The film also marks Mira Sethi’s big screen debut and has an all-star cast that includes names such as Amna Ilyas, Jawed Sheikh, Hina Dilpazeer, Aamir Qureshi, Adnan Shah Tipu and Beo Zafar. 7 Din Mohabbat In will be Mahira and Sheheryar’s second film together after Asim Raza’s Ho Mann Jahaan (2016).
The duo will also be seen in Asim Raza’s next Paray Hut Love, which is being penned by Imran Aslam.
Parwaaz Hai Junoon
Haseeb Hassan’s much-awaited film, Parwaaz Hai Junoon, is a tribute to the Pakistan Air Force and stars Hamza Ali Abbasi, Ahad Raza Mir, Shaz Khan and Hania Aamir in pivotal roles. With two teasers out, the film written by Farhat Ishtiaq is all about Pakistan Air Force’s success stories with nationalism as its nucleus.
While the first teaser introduces us to the characters of Hamza Ali Abbasi and Shaz Khan, who play prominent roles in the film, the second one shows Hania Amir and Ahad Raza Mir as young cadets who are training in the snowy Nasbat Valley.
Parwaaz Hai Junoon has an ensemble cast that also includes Kubra Khan, comedian Shafaat Ali and singer Rachel Viccaji among others.
Next in line is upcoming film Azaadi, which will mark the directorial debut of Imran Malik. The film is about finding freedom and is a love story set against the backdrop of the freedom struggle in Jammu and Kashmir.
The titular character Azaad is being essayed by Moammar Rana. He is shown to be a freedom fighter who chooses Kashmir over love, career, and family, whereas Sonya Hussyn is essaying a British journalist of Pakistani roots who loves Azaad. Besides Rana and Hussyn, veteran actor Nadeem Baig will be essaying Moammar’s father in the film.
By the looks of the trailer, Azaadi seems to be packed with a lot of action and impressive visual effects. With actors like Moammar Rana, Nadeem Baig and Sonya Hussyn on the cast and the theme of patriotism, the film might attract the masses, but only time will tell how it fares at the box-office.
Quite recently, the teaser for Javed Sheikh’s directorial comeback film Wajood was launched, which promises to be a romantic thriller of sorts. While the teaser didn’t give away the plot, one thing that we do know for sure is that it has been shot in Turkey.
The film stars Danish Taimoor, Saida Imtiaz and Indian actor Aditi Singh in key roles. Danish Taimoor, will be seen essaying the character of a pilot, while Jawed Sheikh is possibly essaying the villain’s role.
Apart from Danish, Saida and Aditi, Wajood’s cast includes Nadeem Baig, Shahid Hameed, Frieha Altaf, Ali Salman and Jawed Sheikh himself.
PS: We are eagerly awaiting Bilal Lashari’s Maula Jutt reboot but nothing has been announced yet. The year 2018 will also see the release of Ali Zafar’s much awaited action-comedy Teefa in Trouble, Nabeel Qureshi and Fizza Ali Meerza’s Load Wedding, and the highly anticipated sequel to Nadeem Baig’s blockbuster Jawani Phir Nahi Ani, which will release on Eid ul Azha 2018.
